[stars] Sustainability at Holcim: Our Way to Becoming a Net Zero Company

Global cement makers have announced an ambitious new climate target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to a quarter this decade using existing technology. Signatories, representing 80 % of the industry outside China, also pledged to get to net zero by 2050 without offsetting emissions. The industry is responsible for around 7 % of global carbon emissions. The plans include a reduction in the use of fossil fuels, adjusting the ingredients used to make cement, and expanding the use of carbon capture technologies not yet in widespread use.

Holcim is the global leader in building materials and solutions. Holcim has recently set the first 2050 net-zero targets in its industry, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), building on its 2030 commitments approved in September 2020. Setting a new milestone for its sector, Holcim's targets cover the company's entire value chain, including both direct and indirect emissions. What role does sustainability and the circular economy play at Holcim? What innovations are to be expected in the coming years? What will this industry look like in 2030? And finally, what is Holcim's way to become a net zero company by 2050? Magali ANDERSON will give her insights into these most crucial developments.

Magali ANDERSON, Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer of Holcim, is responsible for putting sustainability at the core of Holcim's innovation pipeline but also of the company strategy and decision making. Magali joined Holcim in 2016 as Group Head of Health & Safety before being appointed to the Group Executive Committee and Chief Sustainability Officer in October 2019, a role which was expanded to her current position in 2021.

Magali has over three decades of experience in the energy sector, primarily with Schlumberger. She started her career as a field engineer on offshore oil rigs in Nigeria and worked on 4 continents in both operational and functional roles.

Magali graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from INSA Lyon, France.
